Welcome to
Melbourne Florida
Named after the Australian city,
Melbourne is located on Florida's Space Coast, not far from Cape
Canaveral. It's had a military history from earliest times, starting
as a training ground for Confederate soldiers during the Civil
War.
In the 1940, the city was used
to train army and navy pilots and Melbourne is now a high tech
center with many firms involved in technology and electronics.
While part of Melbourne is on the Florida mainland, a small part
is on a barrier island, separated from the rest by the Indian
River Lagoon.
Two four lane causeways connect
this part of Melbourne to the mainland. Melbourne is famous as
the birthplace of Jim Morrison of The Doors and several major
sports stars.
There's plenty to do in Melbourne,
whether youíre interested in exploring America's space
faring history or lying on the beach. Sun seekers will enjoy
the year round warmth.
In winter, the average temperature
is a balmy 72F while in summer it's a scorching 91F. There are
also plenty of areas to explore in the immediate vicinity, such
as Cocoa Beach, where many of those involved in the space program
have retired.
Shuttle launches, surfing and
sunshine make this part of Florida's Space Coast a popular vacation
and retirement destination. This thriving city is also close
to Disney World and Cape Canaveral, which are good starting points
for exploring the local attractions and entertainment before
sampling the nightlife on offer. Visit Melbourne in Florida ñ
you'll be glad you did.
