Sanibel Florida Attractions
On a visit to Sanibel, start
your day by enjoying one of the island's famous beaches. The
pristine white sand and the great views are just two of the attractions
but you will also enjoy the fabulous weather and the opportunities
for shelling.
Larger shells are often found
near Captiva, while the smaller ones are near the lighthouse.
There are always plenty of shells, though the best pickings come
only after stormy weather.
Be warned, you are not allowed
to harvest live seashells, but there are plenty of empty ones
to find. Sanibel is also a great place for fishing, with tarpon,
redfish, snook and more available.
Sanibel is also a great place
for eco-tourism. Wildlife preserves cover more than 60 percent
of the island's surface. The Jay N Dingí Darling Wildlife
Refuge covers 6,300 acres and is home to 32 mammal species, 50
reptile species and 238 bird species.
You can drive, cycle, hike or
canoe through different parts of the refuge for bird watching
and animal spotting. The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Center
gives another chance to experience nature, with a butterfly exhibit
and marine touch tank for you to enjoy. Guided tours and discovery
walks are available here.
Find out more about Sanibel and
shells at the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum or find out about
bird rehab at the Center for Rehabilitation of Wildlife.
Sanibel Historical Museum and
Village gives you the opportunity to experience old Sanibel from
the 19th century and it's also worth visiting the Old Town, which
is near the Sanibel Lighthouse, which opened in 1884. Although
the lighthouse is not open to visitors, it still makes a great
photo opportunity.
