Welcome to
Sanibel Florida
Sanibel is a city on the eastern
end of Sanibel Island, Florida. This barrier island is on the
Gulf Coast of Florida and is joined to the mainland by the Sanibel
Causeway.
The island is 12 miles long by
4 miles wide and visitors can enjoy its tropical beauty. Sanibel
has year round sunshine with an average temperature of 75F.
White, sandy beaches, palm trees
and great views of the surrounding water complete the charms
of this beautiful island. The northwestern end of the island
contains Captiva and Captiva Island, with the town of Wulfert
in between.
Sanibel has strict building codes,
with most buildings only three stories or less. This has proved
useful in the past for surviving hurricanes without too much
damage.
Sanibel is famous for its shells.
Because of its orientation, the island lies east to west instead
of north to south, the beaches collect large numbers of shells,
which is another reason why it is so attractive.
These shells also provide one
of the island's main industries, the other being tourism. The
island's population swells during the winter months as snowbirds
flee the north to experience its balmy winters.
Despite its small size, Sanibel
Island has a lot to offer visitors. There are beaches and attractions
as well as restaurants. In addition, the mainland is only a short
drive away, with lots to do in nearby Fort Myers. There are various
great attractions, entertainment and nightlife in Sanibel which
is part of South Florida.
